Pro Tips: Austin tacos and BBQ during SXSW

If you’re one of the bazillion people about to descend on Austin for the annual boondoggle that is SXSW, you’re probably in the process of RSVP’ing for dozens of events (most of which you won’t attend), locating business cards (for those you do attend) and deciding which panels you’re actually willing to stand in line to see while in Austin.

All of that is well and good, but given that Austin was recently voted one of the best foodie cities in America you should also start thinking about which must-have restaurants you plan to patron during your stay. There are tons of lists floating around (here and here for example), but for those of you that need a little more help deciding here are my recommendations.

Breakfast

Yes, the rumors are true. The breakfast scene in Austin is really all about tacos. Luckily, there are more, quality options than ever. If you’ve never had a breakfast taco in Austin, you should make time to visit Torchy’s Tacos and/or TacoDeli, both of which are exceptional. Unfortunately, neither have a location in downtown Austin so you’re looking at a drive to get to either. TacoDeli tacos are delivered fresh every morning to a number of local groceries downtown (check out Royal Blue on 3rd and Lavaca), so that is also an option if you don’t have access to transportation.

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous or want to try something new, you may also want to check out one of Austin’s institutions, Juan in a Million on East First Street. The restaurant was featured on Man vs. Food a few years ago, but it is truly famous for two reasons - 1) the owner gives the best handshakes in Austin (fact) and 2) the “Don Juan” is probably the best cure for a hangover this side of the Mason Dixon line.

BBQ

If you don’t already know about BBQ in Central Texas, you’ve probably been living under a rock. If you do know but haven’t heard about Franklin’s in Austin, this would be a good time to stop what you’re doing and go read this (I’ll wait). Franklin’s is no-nonsense BBQ (sauce debate be damned). The ‘restaurant’ opens at 11 am and serves up delicious brisket, sausage, turkey and ribs until it is gone (typically takes less than 2 hours). IMPORTANT - if you have your heart set on eating Franklin’s while you’re in Austin, they best strategy is to GO EARLY. There’s almost always a line by 10 am, but during SXSW you should probably plan to be there by 9 (I recommend getting breakfast tacos on the way and eating them while you wait). Also, they are closed Mondays, so don’t put it off until your last day of SXSW Interactive.

There are other BBQ places in town that are also worth checking out as well. Iron Works is popular and located close to the convention center. Salt Lick is legendary as well (long drive, be warned). Regardless of the restaurant, make sure to go with a decent appetite and order several different things (ribs and brisket are no brain-ers).
